Q. Hi,I have a nearly 6 month old papillon. He’s up to date on all his shots and his last appointment was at the beginning of this month. He has allergies so he’ll be a little itchy and sneezy at times, but still very playful and active. I recently changed his food from purina exclusive kibble to evo turkey and chicken canned formula. His activity level hasn’t really changed that much since the switch. But I noticed he’s been coughing and sniffling and he’s spit up a liitle bit of clear liquid and yellowish clear liquid that looks a little foamy in parts. It hasn’t been a full week yet since his food has been switched. I don’t know if that is causing a problem or if it’s normal or if it’s allergy related. I wanted to see if it was something serious since I’m not scheduled to take him back to the vet for another 2 weeks since he’s got a neutering appt then. Thanks.
Thanks for your question. In general, food allergies, or hypersensitivities, will not show up as nasal congestion and coughing. The hallmark signs of food reactions are ear infections, skin infections, and sometimes diarrhea. The coughing and sneezing that you notice … Continue reading
Q. Can a dog recover from Parvo virus?
Q: I am watching my brother’s dog while he is in college. Three days ago she was very lethargic, vomiting (seemed like mucus), and refuse to eat or drink anything. I found this kind of strange because I have another … Continue reading
Q. Is it possible to acquire a disease-free Silkie chicken. I don’t want to threaten the health of my 20 pet budgies, but I was considering a “lap chicken” as a pet. Are there any viruses inevitably endemic to domestic chickens that are a danger to my budgies? Are vaccinations available or recommended for chickens? The hen would be a house pet, and never exposed to wild birds, or mosquitoes.
Thanks for your question. Before acquiring a pet chicken, be sure you check with your local code enforcement to see whether you are allowed to have farm animals where you live. They are prohibited in many areas. Disease-free poultry are … Continue reading
Q. I had my cats in for vaccinations on the 19th. Both were vaccinated for kennel cough, my female is fine but my male has been sneezing for 3 days. No discharge from his eyes, he is still eating, he isn’t coughing but he appears to be running a fever today. Does he need to be seen or is this a reaction to the vaccine?
Hello, It is possible the sneezing is secondary to the vaccine, which is usually not a problem. However, if they are running a fever, not acting like themselves, or have changes with their nose or eyes, they must be evaluated. … Continue reading
Q. I am planning on purchasing a hedgehog as a per in the next few months. After there any vaccinations or health treatments that these animals need or are required to own?
Hedgehogs are fascinating pets. There are not any routine vaccinations for hedgehogs; however, as with any non-traditional pet an examination soon after purchase is strongly recommended. The reasons for this exam include: i) looking for signs of common diseases (in … Continue reading
