Dr. Chris Smithson attended Auburn University, graduating with honors with a Bachelors Degree in Animal and Dairy Science in 1999. He stayed at Auburn University for veterinary school, and received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine with honors in 2002.
Dr. Smithson spent several years in general small animal practice with North Bay and Pebble Creek Animal and Bird Hospitals in Tampa before deciding to concentrate on veterinary dentistry. He then completed a three-year Clinical Residency in Dentistry and Oral Surgery at the Center for Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery in Gaithersburg, Maryland. In 2011, Dr. Smithson returned to the Tampa Bay Area and is one of three board certified veterinary dentists in Tampa Bay. He also sees patients on a referral basis at The Pet Dentist in Wesley Chapel, FL.
He is a member of the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS) and a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (DAVDC). He has lectured at local and national veterinary conferences and has published articles in the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry. Dr. Smithson’s special interests include oral and maxillofacial surgery. He welcomes existing clients to bring their pets in for evaluation of:
- periodontal disease
- fractured teeth
- oral tumors
- jaw fractures
- oro-nasal fistulas
- salivary gland disorders
- cleft palate surgery
- developmental dental abnormalities
- brachycephalic airway syndrome
Dr. Smithson is married to Heather, who is also a veterinarian and originally from Tampa, and they have two young daughters. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, canoeing, gardening and any activity that allows him to be outside. He has a cat named Moby.
Dr. Smithson is available for consultations at North Bay Animal and Bird Hospital, Temple Terrace Animal and Bird Hospital, Pebble Creek Animal and Bird Hospital and The Cat Doctors on a rotating basis. He may be contacted through these hospitals.
