The American Heartworm Society recommends using an FDA- or EPA-approved insecticide designed for use on dogs to minimize mosquitoes. Prevention or reduction of standing water and limiting outdoor activities during the peak mosquito times of dawn and dusk will also help prevent heartworm infection. Testing is simple and only twice a year!

They do not require a lot of living space and are relatively inexpensive to maintain. With frequent, gentle handling a hamster can easily become tame. However, they are nocturnal animals and will not tolerate being held still for long. Hamsters may bite or show aggression in response to rough handling, sudden disturbances, being around other hamsters (especially female hamsters that are pregnant or lactating), or when they are ill or in pain.

Hair loss may be due to infectious agents (mites, fleas, mange, etc), or an infection may be present. There are tests we can do to check that out. However, some newer peanut butter formulations now contain xylitol, a sugar substitute also found in sugar-free gum, candies, toothpastes and baked goods.

It is unfortunately common for people to make an assumption that a safe medication for people will also be safe for pets and a number of animals are poisoned by ibuprofen when their owner attempts a simple treatment for pain. Never use any medication on your pet without checking with your veterinarian.

Dental disease can be managed through a thorough oral exam, trimming and evaluation of abnormal teeth, dental x-rays to determine the extent of the disease below the gumline, and pain medications. Ensuring that he is eating and supplemental syringe feeding are also important. Dental disease can be quite painful and without aggressive treatment, can seriously affect your pet's quality of life. Other diseases could also be at work as well and after a thorough exam, other testing may be considered as well.
- [Is it true that dogs with cryptochidism have a higher incidence of developing testicular cancer later in life? The recommended age for neutering, however, is the same as for non-cryptorchid patients. We recommend neutering patients expected to weigh more than 50 lbs as an adult at 12-18 months of age and those expecting to weigh less than 50 lbs at 6-7 months of age.

Ivermectin dosages for hedgehogs are very small and are diluted from the large mammal (cattle/pig) solution in order to be safe. Therefore, I recommend using this medication only under direct veterinary supervision. In most cases, I prefer using a similar product (selamectin, the active ingredient in Revolution) due to its ease of use. If your hedgie is suffering from mites, we would be happy to help you by examining him and treating with the appropriate safe medication.

- [I have recently found red spots in my guinea pig’s cage, and one of the guinea pigs has lost some hair near her nose. Blood in the urine may be due to an infection or urinary stones in the bladder or kidneys. If there is any concern, I recommend an examination and collecting a urine sample for testing to see if there is blood present.
- [I have a 3-month old male kitten – is it too soon to declaw and neuter? Trimming nails, which is quick and easy, is a regular part of caring for indoor cats as well as providing scratching surfaces (please see the article The Importance of Cat Claws for more information). Many people are surprised to learn that removal of the claws requires removal of bone at the last joint and is actually a partial toe amputation, equivalent to removal of a finger at the last knuckle. There are well-studied adverse effects from this procedure such as chronic pain, arthritis, nerve pain, tendency to bite and urinating outside the litter box. At three months of age this is the perfect time to start teaching your kitten how you prefer him to use, or not use, his claws.
- [I found two small kittens of about 4 weeks last week. They seem healthy and eat regularly however their stool is watery sometimes and there bellies are extremely round. Based upon your description, there is a good possibility that your guinea pig has an upper respiratory infection (URI) and should be examined soon for appropriate treatment. These infections are primarily bacterial in nature, and have the possibility to progress to pneumonia quickly, especially in young guinea pigs. - [I have a parakeet who’s poop is the color of chalk. These urates can normally be clear or chalky in color, so I suspect that is what you are seeing. If there is no dark green to brown stools mixed with the urates, I would be concerned your parakeet is not eating well. Less food=less stool. This may be due a number or health problems. I would recommend a full examination if you have any concerns. Birds are masters of hiding disease until they are very sick, so any unusual symptoms should be checked out by an experienced avian veterinarian as soon as possible. - [My rabbit (1 yr old mini lop) has been eating significantly less although he is eating throughout the day(carrots, hay and pellets). We did just move a few days ago however it is a house that he has been to before. There is a dog here as well that does come up to his cage that was not here before. Other causes such as dental disease, underlying discomfort or pain, etc. can also cause a decrease in appetite. I would always advise a physical exam with a veterinarian experienced with rabbits if your bunny is eating less to ensure there are no other causes for his dietary changes. At the minimum, I recommend adding in additional syringe feeding of a complete diet made for rabbits with decreased appetite (Oxbow Critical Care) to prevent further issues. If a rabbit's food intake decreases, the motility( movement) of the gut decreases. If the intestinal tract slows down too much, GI bacteria normally in the gut can overgrow to levels that can make the rabbit more ill, and can potentially be fatal. In most cases, supportive care such as feeding and additional fluids to rehydrate the rabbit can help resolve the problem, but some rabbits may need more aggressive treatment and tests.
- [I just adopted a new morkie puppy. He is 6 weeks old. He keeps scratching by his ears a lot. Scratching of the ears in any pet is not normal. It can indicate a problem such as ear infections, fleas, mites, dry skin and/or allergies. 6 weeks of age is an important time in a puppy's life as this is an age where their immune system is not yet completely developed and they are more susceptible to infections and other diseases. For this reason, vaccines are important every 3 weeks until they are 4 months of age. An exam by a Veterinarian during each of these times is crucial as well so that they can ensure your puppy's health as he is growing and catch any health concerns early. Please have your puppy examined as soon as possible so that any potential problems can be addressed.

Would pulling out his teeth be the only way or is there an alternative?](https://www.tampabayvets.net/questions/im-assuming-my-cat-has-a-tooth-decay-because-of-his-breath-and-unable-to-eat-hard-food-what-is-the-treatment-would-pulling-out-his-teeth-be-the-only-way-or-is-there-an-alternative-and-how-muc/): Sorry to hear that your kitty is having difficulty eating hard kibble.  Unfortunately, halitosis (bad breath) and a decreased or picky appetite can be due to a number of underlying medical conditions.  As you have pointed out, dental disease is a large cause for concern and can range from broken teeth, tooth root abscess, dental resorptive lesions, infections or inflammatory conditions of the soft tissues of the mouth, etc etc.  There are also systemic body conditions that can result in a pet having both bad breath and/or developing a decreased or more picky appetite, such as kidney disease.

At three months of age this is the perfect time to start teaching your kitten how you prefer him to use, or not use, his claws.

They can contract viruses, ingest foreign objects or have congenital problems which could be causes.  We would need to examine your puppy and could recommend a course of action from there.

The doctor can recommend an effective treatment, which should begin as early as 2 to 3 weeks of age. Preventive deworming is the best protection. Preventive deworming is a practice recommended by the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists (AAVP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Preventive deworming consists of treating your pet for intestinal worms at regular intervals that are specifically designed to prevent disease and the shedding of parasite eggs in your yard and home.

For reasons we have yet to understand a particular Coronavirus particle in a particular cat can mutate and become the FIP virus. This mutated virus can affect any organ (eyes, brain, kidneys, liver.....) and eventually become fatal. The virus classically presents in 2 forms (the wet form with fluid formation in the chest or abdomen) or the dry form (nodules form in any organ and are much harder to diagnose). In addition, some cats decline rapidly while some struggle for months to over a year. Given all this variability the vaccine produced years ago was found to be useless. Stress has been found to promote the disease (hence patient's seeming to become ill after adoption or routine surgeries such as a spay or neuter). The mutated virus is not contagious. Except for some experimental medications, there is not a reliable treatment other than supportive care for FIP.I hope this is helpful,Christine Simon D.V.M.

First would be to determine if your pet is truly coughing. Reverse sneezing and gagging can be mistaken for cough. Recording the "episode" on your cell phone can be very helpful to your veterinarian.

We would always recommend a full examination prior to surgery to ensure that your rabbit is healthy and doing well before going forward with general anesthesia and surgery.  Once we are sure that he/she is doing well, we can usually schedule the surgery after they are 4-5 months of age.

- [What’s is an ear cytology for?](https://www.tampabayvets.net/questions/whats-ear-cytology-for/): An ear cytology is a laboratory procedure that allows us to microscopically (under a microscope) see what is ‘growing’ in a patient’s ear. Although we will do a comprehensive physical examination and look into your pet’s ears with an otoscope we can only ‘see so much’. Bacteria and yeast are too small to see with the naked eye and come in many types (species). Once we take a swab of the ear, we will roll the debris-laden swab onto a microscope slide, fix and stain the slide and then look under the microscope for microbe identification. Without this test, we are just guessing about which medications to use and there are dozens of medications to choose from. Clearly, successful treatment of ear disease can be expedited if we know exactly what we are treating and with which medications. If you have ever had an ‘ear-ache’ you know that they can be painful, so in addition to prescribing the needed medications for treatment the veterinarian will discuss pain management with you.
