Happy Tails: The Story of Cappuccino
Not every patient we care for has fur and four legs — and Cappuccino’s story is a perfect example of the unique and advanced medicine we are proud to provide. ![]()
Cappuccino is an approximately 2 year old female bearded dragon who came to Noah’s Ark Animal Hospital after being diagnosed with a serious reproductive issue. When she was adopted by a veterinary technician at Epic Specialty & Emergency Pet Care, Cappuccino was believed to be egg-bound. After consulting with other veterinarians, including Dr. Shelby Baden at Veterinary Emergency Group South Tampa, Cappuccino was referred to our team to see Dr. Bajc.
Cappuccino was underweight, weighing only 295 grams when a healthy adult female bearded dragon is typically around 400–500 grams. Although she was still eating a little, her appetite was greatly decreased, and she was not acting like herself.
After further evaluation, we determined Cappuccino was suffering from obstructive dystocia — meaning her reproductive tract was affected by retained follicles and egg material that were causing her symptoms.
Because of the complexity of Cappuccino’s condition, Dr. Bajc partnered with Dr. Baden to perform a highly delicate reproductive surgery called an ovariosalpingectomy. Combining Dr. Bajc’s experience in exotic animal surgery with Dr. Baden’s expertise in emergency and critical care allowed the team to carefully plan and perform this challenging procedure, ensuring Cappuccino received the highest level of care every step of the way.
The surgery involved removing both affected oviducts containing fragile, yolk-filled clusters of eggs, followed by removal of the ovaries to prevent future reproductive complications.
Bearded dragon reproductive surgery is incredibly complex. Their anatomy presents unique challenges because the reproductive tissues are closely associated with major blood vessels, the adrenal tissue, and the liver. The surgery required extreme precision and microsurgical technique in order for removal of the egg-filled follicles while protecting the surrounding organs and delicate structures — and thankfully, Cappuccino handled it beautifully.
Since surgery, Cappuccino has continued to thrive. She has regained weight, her appetite has improved, and her personality is back to normal. Watching her continue on her journey to recovery has been incredibly rewarding.
Cappuccino’s case is a reminder of the importance of specialized diagnostics, advanced surgical techniques, and teamwork when caring for exotic patients.
