Questions & Answers

If you receive a ferret on an initial exam that presents with symptoms of adrenal disease, what tests (if any) would you want to run and what are their costs?

Unfortunately no cases are alike.  The definitive test for adrenal gland disease in ferrets is a blood steroid profile that is submitted to an outside lab.  This profile checks the blood levels of several hormones to help to confirm adrenal gland disease and the cost is approximately $250.  Further testing (such as complete blood cell count, chemistry profile, abdominal ultrasound, abdominal radiographs) may be undertaken depending on the individual case, evidence of other diseases going on, and treatment options.
