Questions & Answers

I have a parakeet who’s poop is the color of chalk. What would cause that?

When birds pass stool, they usually pass urine (or urates) at the same time. These urates can normally be clear or chalky in color, so I suspect that is what you are seeing. If there is no dark green to brown stools mixed with the urates, I would be concerned your parakeet is not eating well. Less food=less stool. This may be due a number or health problems. I would recommend a full examination if you have any concerns. Birds are masters of hiding disease until they are very sick, so any unusual symptoms should be checked out by an experienced avian veterinarian as soon as possible. Please let us know if you would like to schedule an appointment.
