Questions & Answers

I have a 6 year old pitbull that is not spayed. Is it too late to spay her? She is in heat and has been bleeding for over a week, is that normal? How much would it cost to spay her?

It is never too late to have your pet spayed.  There are many benefits to having your pet spayed at any age including: eliminating the risk of unwanted puppies, stopping the heat cycles that she is currently experiencing, eliminating the chance of ovarian and uterine cancer, and more importantly, eliminating the chance of a life-threatening uterine infection known as pyometra.

The noticeable part of the heat cycle, when she is bleeding, often lasts 12-14 days.  She can be spayed at any time.  The cost for the entire process and procedure is only $249.  This includes the necessary, pre-anesthetic bloodwork and exam of the heart and lungs, the safety net of an IV catheter and fluids, monitoring and temperature control before, during and after the procedure, the preparation of the procedure, including anesthesia, the sterile procedure itself, recovery, 1 night stay in the hospital and a post-operative examination.  It also includes the suture removal 14 days later.  Please give us a call to schedule a convenient time for us to meet you and your pet and we can answer any other questions that you may have about this very important procedure.  Call me at anytime at 813 885 4477, Dr. Peter Helmer.
