Rabies Alert Issued in Hillsborough County: What Tampa Bay Pet Owners Need to Know
A rabies alert has been issued for Hillsborough County after a stray cat in the Town and Country area tested positive for the virus, according to the Florida Department of Health. The cat was found deceased near Twelve Oaks Blvd. on April 12. As a result, the alert will remain in effect for 60 days.
What Area Is Affected?
The alert includes the following boundaries:
- North: Linebaugh Ave.
- South: Waters Ave.
- East: Anderson Rd.
- West: Wilsky Blvd.
If you live or walk pets near this area, please use extra caution. The Hillsborough County Department of Health is closely monitoring wildlife activity during this time.
Why This Matters
Rabies is a serious—and invariably fatal—viral disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans and pets. It’s typically transmitted through bites or scratches from infected animals, with wild animals like raccoons, bats, foxes, and stray cats being the most common carriers.
What You Can Do to Protect Your Family and Pets
- Keep pets up to date on their rabies vaccinations. It’s not just smart—it’s the law.
- Avoid contact with wild animals, especially if they appear sick, aggressive, or unusually friendly.
- Supervise your pets outdoors. Don’t let them roam freely where they might come into contact with wildlife.
- Report suspicious animal behavior to local animal control or the Florida Department of Health.
- Seek medical attention immediately if you or your pet are bitten or scratched by a wild or stray animal.
Rabies Exposure: What to Do
If you believe you or your pet have been exposed to rabies, immediate medical care is critical. Post-exposure treatment is necessary to prevent the disease from developing.
